The Centre for Documentation and Evaluation of Alternatives to Animal Experiments (ZEBET)

ZEBET stands for the “Centre for Documentation and Evaluation of Alternatives to Animal Experiments” at the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

It was founded in 1989 with the aim of reducing the use of animals for scientific purposes to the necessary minimum and developing alternatives to animal experiments. After the amendment of the Animal Welfare Act in 2013 and the associated restructuring of the BfRshort forGerman Federal Institute for Risk Assessment's area of responsibility in the field of laboratory animal protection, ZEBET was fully integrated into the newly founded Bf3R.

Tasks and areas of ZEBET

  • Advising authorities on alternative methods

ZEBET at the Bf3R is the central contact point for alternative and complementary methods to animal testing. It advises federal ministries, state authorities and the European Union Commission on scientific alternatives - for more animal welfare and innovative research.

  • Provide information on alternative methods

ZEBET aims to provide scientists with the best possible information on alternative methods. The Bf3R is working on the development of a new search engine to enable the targeted provision of information relevant to the protection of laboratory animals.

  • Develop alternative methods to animal testing (Replace)

Current Bf3R research projects dedicated to the replacement of animal testing with alternative methods.
