Bf3R Research Funding

The German Center for the Protection of Laboratory Animals (Bf3R) allocates funds for scientific research projects with the aim of developing alternative methods in line with the 3R principle. Furthermore, the Bf3R coordinates the nationwide allocation of funding initiatives for 3R-relevant research. Bf3R scientists also advise other German federal states (“Laender”) on allocating grant funds for 3R-relevant research.

Beyond that, the Bf3R advises the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) on the awarding of the German Animal Welfare Research Prize.

The Bf3R provides the SET Foundation for the Promotion of Research into Alternative and Complementary Methods to Reduce Animal Experiments with financial support and advice.

Bf3R Research Funding - Replacement, Reduction and Refinement

Every two years, the German Centre for the Protection of Laboratory Animals (Bf3R) at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) awards funds for scientific research projects addressing the 3R principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine). Projects are funded that intend to replace and reduce the use of laboratory animals in areas of medical research or basic biological research, or that aim to identify, classify, and reduce pain, suffering, or harm in laboratory animals and improve husbandry conditions. The total budget of approx. 350,000 euros per year enables the funding of up to 10 projects with a funding volume of approx. 35,000 euros per year and a total duration of up to 3 years.
